Blog Tour: Two Children’s Books by Catherine Christensen

Today I’m part of a double blog tour for two children’s books by Catherine Christensen. I love getting books in the mail, so it was a special treat to get two books in the mail for review. It was fun to read and share them with my children.

Baby Book of Mormon Stories: Blessing the Nephite Children

blessing-the-nephite-children_9781462118755_web-1First, I’ll tell you about a board book, Blessing the Nephite Children.

The mail lady delivered it while my toddler was sleeping. When he woke up, I read it to him. Then I read it to him again and again over the next few days.

The amount of words per page is excellent for a toddler-length attention span, the story has a sweet message about Jesus’s love for all children, and the pictures work well for toddlers.

Young kids can be hard on books, so I feel the need to review the structure, not just the content. The book structure is about average as far as board books go. I’ve seen board books more flimsy and board books more sturdy. Yes, a toddler could destroy this book, but no more easily than a toddler could destroy most other board books.

I hope there will be more installments of the Baby Book of Mormon Stories series. What a fun way to teach young children stories from the scriptures.

The Holy Ghost: Discovering Your Extraordinary New Gift

The Holy Ghost: Discovering Your Extraordinary New Gift is a coloring and activity book aimed at eight-year-olds. The cover is thicker than most coloring book covers, so children could use it for a keepsake.

I’ve taught lots of children about this age in primary. Some kids will look at a book like this for a few seconds and then go play video games. Others will enjoy the crossword puzzles, quotes, games, and stories, and learn a lot about getting baptized and confirmed, and about how to recognize promptings from the Holy Ghost. There are even some ideas that could work well for Family Home Evening lessons.

This would be a great gift idea for a child about to be baptized. I may need to get a second copy so both of my twins can have their own.

Jane Delve, illustrator for The Holy Ghost

photoI have been married for 10 years and 8 of those years have been dedicated to rearing three little children. My youngest is now in playgroup for a couple of mornings a week, so for those precious few hours I am finally putting a portfolio together, creating a blog, and concentrating on something other than cleaning house and changing nappies!! Life is great, and even better to finally get a little time to let my creative juices flow!!
